I am very pleased with Yakima for creating this rack. We downgraded cars which forced us to have a 1.25" hitch instead of an earlier 2" hitch. Our previous four bike rack was from Reese, which worked very well but was heavy and over built.
Yakima BigHorn 4 is lighter yet very strong. It is the perfect size while supporting four bikes. The assembly instructions were clear. The parts and box were nicely thought out. The bike mounting and straps are as good as any I used. There was not a large selection of four bike hitch racks for 1.25" and I was please Yakima still supported this need. It appears this rack is identical between the 1.25" and 2" hitches with only one part change. Well thought out design.
The only negative and the reason I didn't give it 5 stars relates to a plastic guide when lowering the rack. This plastic guide can pop off and needs to be pushed into placed when lifting the rack in the upright position. I don't anticipate lowering it often and with care it functions fine, but you do need to keep this in mind.
Do note that for 1.25" hitches, you do get more side to side sway compared to a 2" hitch but it is acceptable and the Yakima design is plenty strong enough.

Once loaded, the anodized aluminum tray stores the bike's back wheel in the tire holder (which fits tires as wide as 2.7 inches) while holding the front fork in place. The rack is secure, tough, and simple to install, with a design that fits square, round, and most factory crossbars. Compatible with disc brakes, the fork-mount rack even comes with a key and locking system, so you can keep your bike safe on long road trips while you're in a store or restaurant.

We bought this rack as our 2nd set for our Land Rover LR3 with factory crossbars. Our first one is a hitch mount and we can't use it when we are towing PLUS I want to be able to easily install on my other car's Thule crossbars.
Pros:
- excellent fit on a variety of bikes/forks. Four fork types, four secure bikes.
- mount clips are metal so the racks are on the crossbars tight and sturdy
- locks are included. One lock secures rack to car and bike to rack--brilliant! Also, all 4 racks were keyed identical right out of the box so 1key fits all 4. Don't know if this was a lucky coincidence or a manufacturer oversight (are ALL racks in the same model keyed the same?)
- no noticeable whistling/rack noise without a fairing
Cons:
- installation takes a while--mostly due to the front mount fit configuration.
Overall, this is a high quality and great functioning roof mount rack. It is highly versatile and accomodates all types of crossbars (round, square, aero/elliptical), bike forks and tires. Personally, I was looking for all that AND an easy on/off mounting experience. Because of this last point, I'm giving it 4 instead of 5 stars.
I will be returning these to try the Rocky Mounts Tierod rack. Based on reading other's reviews on this site and watching an installation video, it seems like the Tierods will meet both of my requirements.
However, if you plan on keeping your rack on your car/SUV most of the time and want a fork mount roof rack, I would highly recommend this Inno rack. I did a lot of research and this rack is a better value than both the Yakima and Thule equivalent racks.

The rack mounts to 4 to 4.5-inch square RV bumpers and wraps around the spare tire so that you can mount your bikes to the rear end of the vehicle. The rack features rugged steel construction and offers a weight capacity of 30 pounds per bike.
The Around the Spare Mighty Rack mounts to the bumper and fits around the spare wheel.

This review is from: Swagman Mighty Rack - Around the Spare (Sports)
Poor quality-not sturdy connection to bumper. If you have bikes with a thick frame you won't be able to get the hooks around the frame. The supplied tie down straps are too smooth and loosen with vibration. Supplied foam padding tears upon first loading. Even with a straight bar purchased seperately you cannot get them on with out stratching our brand new bikes. The bikes sit too close together and they rub against each other and scratch more while transporting them. Even with bungy cords it doesn't work. When I called the manufacturer to ask if there were any other cradles or hooks I could purchase to modify the rack-she said what do you want for a cheap rack! You should have bought a more expensive one-so much for $85. Don't buy it!!!!!!!!

About Allen Bike Racks In 1967, after a few years of working on the aerospace technology for the Apollo missions, Dick Allen was out of a job. Government cutbacks led Allen, a Harvard-trained physicist, to transform his garage hobby into a new industry. A cycling enthusiast, inventor, and family man, Allen had a personal need for a bike-carrying device. On weekends, he would take his sons and wife to Cape Cod or the White Mountains of New Hampshire. What proved difficult time and again was the transport of his family’s bicycles. Rather than fight through inconvenience with twine and a dinged car, Allen sought an answer for himself as well as a market in which he foresaw major growth possibilities.
Always a pathfinder, Allen took to work in his Lincoln, Massachusetts garage in search of a more efficient way to transport bikes. Drafting designs during the day and constructing them throughout the night, he put together a model made of electrical conduit, metal strapping, and fire hose casings (for padding). At first, the Allens tested the prototype on weekend excursions. Finding the first trunk-mounted rack to be a success, Dick started Allen Bike Racks. Dealer acceptance came quickly, and by 1971 Allen Bike Racks were sold nationally through a number of major bicycle distributors. Today, the company owns over three dozen patents and offers a versatile product line of bike racks while Dick’s son Alex now owns and operates the business. What started out as a small garage run operation now operates three warehouses nationally, two factories abroad, and has products sold in more than a dozen countries around the world.
This review is from: Allen 103S Premium 3-Bike Trunk Mount Rack (Sports)
This product was exactly what I wanted and more. I've had no problems whatsoever. It is extremely easy to set up, even for a girl like me. I keep my bike rack in the trunk. It folds and unfolds easily. I have a Mazda Protege hatchback and yes, the bottom rubberized bar of the bike rack does rest on my license plate and cover it up, but so what. Even if it didn't the bikes would be in the way and the cops wouldn't be able to see my plate anyway.
I would like to address some gripes other users had. Some said it was hard to put a girls bike on it and they had to buy some bar to make it like a guys bike. I have put two different types of girls bikes on this rack with no problem. You see, the strap rests where you set the bike turn. If you need it at an angle for a female bike, turn it at an angle. It's very easy. Also, some have complained of the slack of the straps and that they hang down too far. I use these and tie them through the bike wheels. That way my wheels don't turn while I'm driving. This bike rack also hasn't scratched my car nor the bikes on it. Really, if you have any sense this rack shouldn't cause you a problem.
I have driven long distances with multiple bikes on my rack. If I drive over pot holes the bikes do bounce around and cause me a little scare, but they have never come close to falling off or loosening on the rack. It's only my paranoia that gives me jitters, not an actual experience with them coming off. If you are parked in a shady area with your bikes on the rack, please secure them one way or another because they can be tempting for a thief.
I would recommend this bike rack to everyone.

Retractable locking cable secures bikes to carrier, with an additional lock securing carrier to vehicle. View larger. Ultra-light but Heavy on Features
Designed with compatibility in mind, the Helium 2-Bike Hitch Carrier works with either 1¼ inch, or 2 inch hitch receivers by means of an included adapter. It is also incredibly strong, stable and full featured, as seen in its varied standard components, including: top-of-the-line T3 cradles set along the carrier arms for holding bikes in place for maximum frame protection and stability, patented No-Sway Cage technology that, working together with the cradles, dramatically reduces the chance of bike-to-bike and/or bike-to-vehicle contact that could result in scratches, an integrated locking cable that secures bikes to the carrier and lock functionality that can be installed in the ergonomic lock knob that secures the hitch to the hitch receiver.
In addition, by way of its easy-to-use Hitch Switch lever, the Helium 2-Bike Hitch Carrier has the ability to fold its carrier arms down at the push of a button when not in use and even tilt the carrier away from vehicle allowing for trunk, hatch or tailgate access (bikes must be removed first). This means that you can get to every corner of your vehicle when you want to and makes it unnecessary to remove the unloaded carrier in order to perform everyday driving tasks like parking. Also impressive though is that the unit's aluminum based body makes it just half the weight of traditional hitch mounted bike carriers. This along with its virtually tool-free assembly make its installation a breeze and removal just as fast when need be.

This review is from: Thule 970XT Helium 2 Bike Hitch Carrier (Sports)
I purchased Thule Helium 970 in July of 2009. I like the bike carrier because it is light and very convenient for every day use.
I just unsure about the rack anti - theft protection. You can't lock the receiver pin like on previous Thule models. And in locked position the Thule Stinger Swinger hitch knob will spin freely but you could easy release the hitch rotating the tighten bolt using a fine plumbing pliers at the open bolt space next to the knob.
I think the stinger assembly needs better anti - theft protection or Thule should design a lockable receiver pin for the model.

Although the ability to carry two bikes is good - four bikes is sometimes simply better, and better yet is the ability to choose between one or the other in a single rack configuration, depending on the number of bikes on hand. This is just what the Thule 918XTR provides. Perfect for growing families and/or ride coordinators who have a varying number or companions from ride to ride, the Thule 918XTR T2 2-Inch Receiver 2-Bike Add-on Hitch Rack is designed for cyclists/drivers who already own and enjoy the functionality of their Thule 916XTR T2 2-Bike Platform Hitch Rack, but want to extend their carrying capacity to four bikes.

Improved locking functionality over earlier hitch mount rack modular add-ons that now includes cable lock for each bike. View larger.
The thule 918XTR is a seamless add-on, allowing for all the functionality of the base Thule 916XTR T2 hitch rack. This includes: quick-loading bike trays; SecureHook ratcheting technology that secures bikes to trays via independent heavy-duty foldable support arms that clamp down on front wheels; adjustable rear wheel straps that hold the rear of bikes to the tray; tilt down functionality -- even when loaded -- for rear vehicle access; and the ability to fold up all four bike trays towards the vehicle when not loaded.
Easy Modular Installation
The 918XTR T2's modular design ensures easy installation and removal as the number of riders changes. To install simply insert the 2-inch backbone add-on assembly of the 918XTR T2 inline with that of your existing and installed 916XTR T2 rack, and tighten. (The 918XTR T2 is only compatible with the 2-inch hitch configuration of the Thule 916XTR T2 carrier.) The longer platform created allows for the mounting of the two bike tray assemblies -- each with independent SecureHook support arms -- that are provided. Only minimal tools and measuring equipment are required for spacing and installation of trays. Once this has been done, owners can also utilize the retractable locks that attach bikes to the ratcheting heads of the SecureHook support arms, to provide protection against bike theft when away from your loaded vehicle. This is a significant security upgrade from the earlier 918XT T2 model.
Key Features

- Hitch Switch lever folds and stores platform when not in use or tilts platform down for rear of vehicle access, even when loaded
