This review is from: Klipsch Sub-12HG Synergy Series 12-Inch 300-Watt Subwoofer with High Gloss Trim (Black) (Electronics)

Due to my job situation, I did not feel like putting a whole lot of money into a pricey home theater receiver and speakers right now but I did want a system I could build into at some point in the near future. What I did know was that I could not stand the poor sound coming out of my Samsung flat panel TV. As a quick cheap short term fix, I first added a Visio sound bar. While the sound bar was a vast improvement over the tv's speakers, it was lacking the "feel it" bass of my downstairs home theater system. Fortunately, the sound bar had a single line out port specifically for a subwoofer. I decided to make a subwoofer the first key part of my future home theater system and I decided to go with a 12 inch subwoofer due to the size of my living room and the open layout.

In regards to the room size, I have a very open floor plan, with nine foot high ceilings in my living room and connected kitchen. The living room opens to an entry way with a two story high ceiling leading to an upper loft and second floor. The living room itself is probably 16 by 16 foot. For these reasons, I felt that I did not want to go with less than a 12 inch sub.

I narrowed my choices down to the Polk PSW505 12" and the Klipsch Synergy Sub12. I debated for several weeks weighing things such as Polk's lower cost, fine reputation among its customers and the reported better speaker cabinet built out of real wood. On the flip side, I really liked Klipsch's reputation for music quality, the non directional bass feel and the greater power and lower bass range of the Klipsch. I presume I would have been happy with either choice but when the Klipsch went on sale for within $20 of the Polk, I decided to go with the Klipsch as I had placed a priority on non directional bass.

While I normally purchase from Amazon, another reputable vendor offered a lower sales price and faster free shipping so I purchased elsewhere. I immediately checked for cracked cabinet feet that some customers have reported but I had no such issues. As others have indicated, this sub is large and really difficult to hide and still keep it close to the tv. It looks like a small shipping trunk in size but after powering this thing up, I had no regrets regarding the larger size.

My first test of the sub was playing a blue ray version of the train movie Unstoppable. I could very easily feel the train not only in my living room but also upstairs as well. I then turned on a March Madness basketball game. I found myself smiling when I could feel the ball hitting the back rim or bouncing across the court floor while I stood in my kitchen. Finally, I turned on Pandora to listen to music. All I can say is that I am very impressed with the results. I know that some guys have said their wives do not like their subwoofers. I can tell you that is not the case with my wife. She is equally appreciative of the results from the sub as I am.

At some point in the future, I will replace the sound bar with a receiver and the Klipsch Quintet SL Flat Panel Speaker System as I want great sound without a lot of speaker bulk, beyond the large sub that is. However, for now, I am very pleased with the results I am obtaining from this sub, a PS3 blue ray player and my sound bar.

Energy Speaker Systems logo The Lowdown Take Classic proves that convenience doesn't have to mean compromise. Sure, you can shop for individual home theater components-but you won't get better performance, or better looks. Integrating the best technologies Energy has to offer, the Take Classic can fill your room with hair-rising effects and theater-like sound: hyperbolic aluminum dome tweeters for screaming highs, Convergent Source Modules for clear, crisp dialogue and music and a Ribbed Elliptical Surround on the subwoofer that makes every explosion a room shaking affair. In addition, integrated keyhole wall-mounts, threaded inserts and rubber bumpers let you choose how and where to place your speakers.

Bragging RightsEnergy has been a leader in audio research and development as well as in the engineering and manufacturing of speakers since 1973. With this pedigree Take Classic components were developed with Energy's core principles in mind. These include:

Flat On-Axis Frequency Response with Wide Bandwidth - Speakers should reproduce the entire audio range in a uniform manner. By ensuring that no one frequency dominates any other, Energy ensures that every note is the way it was intended to be-and the sound as natural as possible.

Wide and Constant Dispersion - Sound at all frequencies radiating from the speaker should be in an even pattern, in all directions throughout the room.

Low Distortion and Resonance - Speaker system is distortion- or resonance-free, but Energy has achieved a significantly lower distortion level, a clearly audible improvement.

The Take Classic 5.1 home theater system also offers terrific performance and great features:

  • Our patented Convergent Source Module (CSM) 3-inch poly-titanium woofer and .75-inch hyperbolic aluminum-dome tweeter -the heart of Energy speakers
  • Patented Ribbed Elliptical Surround woofers create high efficiency, low distortion
  • An aluminum dome tweeter for sonic accuracy
  • Front and rear venting for more powerful bass response

Take Classic raises the bar for 5.1 speaker system performance. It includes a powerful 200-watt subwoofer with a front-firing port, 8-inch driver and Ribbed Elliptical Surround™ for bass that you feel as much as hear. The Convergent Source Module (CSM), with its 3-inch poly-titanium woofer and .75-inch hyperbolic aluminum-dome tweeter, focuses sound for clearer dialogue and stirring music. The CSM gives soundtracks a dynamic frequency range and a huge soundstage, for smooth, realistic sound from each satellite speaker and the center channel. Music and movie lovers rejoice. Take Classic puts the passion back into your favorite films.

Exclusive Energy® Brand Technologies

Convergent Source Module The Convergent Source Module, or CSM, provides wide dispersion, low distortion and amazing midrange performance. The speaker's midrange and tweeter are positioned in close proximity to one another and act as a single source, thereby increasing overall dispersion and reducing any lobing effect. The chambering of the mid and tweeter lowers the driver's resonance, reducing distortion.

Ribbed Elliptical Surround Technology Energy's patented Ribbed Elliptical Surround technology (U.S. patent #6,725,967, Canadian patent #2,407,123) increases excursion, eliminates distortion and raises efficiency on woofers and subwoofers. The Elliptical Surround encompasses the cone, allowing it to move identically in both directions, resulting in near zero distortion. And while conventional designs are often plagued with surround dimpling, which causes them to radiate in and out of phase and distort at all listening levels, Energy's designs aren't influenced by dimpling at all, instead proprietary Ribbed Elliptical Surround technology allows for a larger cone surface, resulting in greater efficiency. This design also lets the cone achieve greater peak to peak movement, thus allowing it to travel more than double the distance of the competition. These attributes enable Energy woofers and subwoofers to move incredible amounts of air, ultimately allowing them to play lower frequencies with greater bass extension and fidelity.

Maximum Performance Tips: The center channel speaker needs to be centrally located so that the dialogue appears to be coming from the center of the screen. It needs to be above or below the monitor, as closely to it as possible. If you're using a rear projection television, the most likely option is to place it above the screen. If you have a front projection system, you have choices-stand mounting, or placement on furniture, for example. It is important, though, to place the speaker so that its front edge is even with the edge of the shelf or stand supporting it. Unwanted diffraction occurs when the center channel is too far back into a cabinet or other surface with edges that could impede sound dispersion.

For left or right front channels, the distance between the speakers should be 6-8 feet at minimum for the best stereo imaging. The optimum room shape is rectangular, with the speakers along one of the shorter walls, facing the opposite side. If possible, do not place speakers against a wall or at rear of a bookshelf; corner placement is usually the worst option. Try to keep the speakers-especially rear vented models-at least two feet from the surface behind it, unless you use a vent plug. For best results mounting on a rear wall, position the speakers so they flank the main listening area and point toward the front of the room. They should be raised to a height of approximately six feet and should ideally have a space of six feet between them. The three most common subwoofer locations include corners (which can result in boomy or exaggerated low frequency response), placement along a wall, away from the corner (producing moderate bass performance with increased fidelity over corner placement), or beside a front speaker (creating a better blend with the front speaker, but sacrificing overall volume). Experimentation with subwoofer placement is highly encouraged; slight adjustments can create big differences in sound reproduction. To test subwoofer placement, install it temporarily in your main listening position and walk around the listening room while playing a familiar piece of music until you find the best sounding position.

This review is from: Energy 5.1 Take Classic Home Theater System (Set of Six, Black) (Electronics)

I recently plunged into the HD market -- bought a Samsung LCD (A550), a Sony Blu-ray player (350 model), an Onkyo TX-SR606, and these speakers. I did tons of research on TVs, BDPs, receivers, and speakers. I found 3 audio/video websites that had reviewed the Energy speakers. Google "Energy 5.1 Take Classic review" and you'll find them.

Aside from what the reviews say, I fell in love with these speakers for their elegantly simple design (they look great with my TV). They are nothing flashy, and since I've owned them (about 6 months now), none of my friends have commented on my "cool-looking speakers." But they HAVE commented on the sound. They sound very fresh, alive, and well-rounded. Movies sound terrific -- the multi-channels blend seamlessly together and create this living, breathing soundfield. And like the professional reviewers say, music sounds especially good. In 5-channel stereo mode, it is bliss for my ears.

I live in an apartment in New York City, so my living room isn't exactly huge. These speakers fill my space wonderfully. I'm not sure how far you could push the volume in a bigger room, but I have yet to push these too far, and I've listened to many movies at a pretty loud volume (my poor neighbors...).

After living with these for half a year, I couldn't be happier. This just might be your best bet at getting amazing 5.1-channel sound without buying large expensive speakers.

I was very disappointed by this product and am going to return it. The sound quality is NOT what you would expect from a BOSE product, very high-end and tinny and there is no ability to adjust the sound i.e. no treble/bass controls. The sound is very localized and doesn't fill the room at all. Also when playing my iPod through the attachment, I had to turn the volume to 99 (max) to even get reasonably loud sound. All in all, not worth the money.
