Samsung SDE-3000 4 channel Video Surveillance System I was somewhat apprehensive about diving into this project. "IPs, Gateways, Subnets, ports, routers, hubs", are all over my head. One missed digit or cable, and your internet is down. Stringing the 60-foot cables is the only real work on this system. Plug the DVR into the wall and plug the camera cables into the DVR, along with and 9-pin-cabled video monitor, and you are running. Then I connected the network cable to my router. In about 30 minutes, I had my router and DVR configured and talking. 10-miles away at home, my wife is looking at me "mooning" her online. Magic! I do however have a static IP address, which I believe makes this easier.
I am so impressed with the system, that I am thinking about the 8 camera package. Viewing online does not give the hi-res as is being recorded and displayed on a video monitor plugged into the DVR. And I have not determined if I can use "playback" while online. I had just been given a quotation (from a friend)to install a four-camera system. Price: $2500. I scored! I purchased the factory refurbished for $449. It appeared to be never used in original OEM packaging. The B/W night vision is pretty impressive as well. Total time from start to finish - 4 hours. And I'm not stressed out.

I purchased this camera for a weekend / vacation home primarily as a security camera and hoping that the video and audio alerts would tell me when someone was in the house. My experience has been a mixed bag. The camera was extremely easy to set up and get activated online. The video quality is plenty good for security. I like the web-based approach a lot - all the video is stored on the dropcam servers for a monthly fee (so no one can take the camera and your recorded video with it) and the software that interprets the video and audio to decide that there's movement detected or sound is also located on the server. Very smart.
The problem is that the motion detection isn't very sensitive and only works (as one reviewer noted) in bright light (daylight is best). Medium brightness household lighting wouldn't do it for me. On the other hand, the audio detection is too sensitive. Even with the microphone sensitivity set all the way down, very slight noises (like a car going by the house with the windows closed) will set it off, making the feature useless for me. What is needed is not only the mic sensitivity control that exists now, but also a threshold setting for noise below which you don't get an alert.
On the plus side, because of the web-based approach Dropcam can improve this on the server without changing the camera. In fact, I've written support on these problems and they say they're working this now. I'm hopeful and expecting improvements, which is why I'm giving 4 stars. If you're application doesn't need this, or is a more specialized alert application like a quiet office, this camera is a good option.

I read through the majority of the reviews on this camera. There certainly are mixed reviews on quality and functionality. I decided to get one of these and test it out for myself. I also had to actually read through all the instructions for setup. I highly recommend spending some time on youtube watching the setup videos. I've had this camera now for several weeks and tweaked every possible setting to get a good feel of the real capabilities. My conclusion, the camera works well for a $100 IR camera.
Comparing most of the reviews, I have a few things to comment on with regard to most of the negative comments about this camera. The web interface does need work. It's a bit glitchy and I'd like it do have a few other features, but everything seems to do exactly what I need it to do. The night vision is as good as any IR camera out there at this price point. I've seen complaints about the quality of the IR with regard to distance and degree angle. The colors are a bit off because of the IR filter. It's a $100 camera. For what I paid for it, I love it. I've installed $500 cameras on jobs. Those camera were certainly better in quality, and performance. However, this camera has all the same features. In my opinion, it's well worth it. Set your expectations appropriately. Again, it's a $100 camera. Don't expect $500 performance.
I'll be installing 5 more.

The Q-See QS408-5 8 Channel H.264 Smart Recording DVR with Pre-Installed 500GB is a good buy. The only disappointment so far is that when the display is in the 8 panel mode (showing all 8 camera views), it doesn't go to full screen when a camera detects motion. I haven't set up the Internet access yet, but it looks like a similar setup for the SVAT dvr that i just sent back for repairs.
I've submitted an inquiry to Q-See about the full screen mode and I'm hoping I will be able to come back here and correct my criticism.

Works as expected. It has a ton of features, and much better than my old Samsung DVR that kicked the bucket.
A couple things worth mentioning:
1. The default network config is somewhat strange (Taiwan DNS servers and time server). The default IP also collided with another machine already on my network. Not a big deal, since I set all this up myself once I got logged in.
2. Determining how to get this DVR to record a channel 24/7 was a bit confusing. I guess it's enabled by default (manual recording), but what's the difference between this and timer recording?
3. Free version of software for DVR works well to monitor live access (at least for iPhone). There is a 10-15 second lag between when image is recorded and when it shows up on my phone.
4. Activex control sometimes crashes IE8 for some reason.
5. When reviewing video on multiple channels online the video isn't synchronized across the channels. It starts loading each channel individually, so they're off by 10-15 seconds it takes to get the next channel loaded.
6. Recorded data seems to be separated into hourly files. If you want to review something remotely across multiple hours I guess you have to individually select the next file to view? I'm still figuring this out.
7. Video out port works well (instead of VGA). I may use the video out to run to a standard TV for monitoring in a bedroom or living room.

If the hardware had any quality it would be a great system. 6 cameras died in the first year, 3 dvr replacements by the factory and it still does not work properly. 3 video cables with shorts from the factory. 2nd HD in the dvr. These units are the epitome of Chinese made crap. Internet accessibility is pretty handy but causes the system to lock up and quit recording. You must be on-site to reboot. Bottom line I am sorry I bought the unit and sorry I did not return it initially. I would not even recommended this unit as a toy.

For months we struggled with 2 Babies-R-Us monitors in the $150 price range. We were constantly battling interference and long cords as we moved the 2 (for 2 babies) monitors from room to room.Then shopping at Sams club this week I saw the Uniden set and decided to give it change out of frustration with the other set. With the Uniden we only need a single monitor and 2 cameras. The monitor is rechargeable so it can go cordless during the day. Interference is a thing of the past now. The monitor lets you scan through up to 4 cameras at varying intervals or you can put all cameras on the screen at once. You can manully scan between cameras and even zoom in and stayed zoomed!
Since I bought 2 systems, I will buy some more cameras and use the second monitor for monitoring outdoors. The old baby monitor are going on Craigs List or Ebay as soon as I can get them packaged up.
It's so nice to have something work as expected right out of the package.
6 MONTH UPDATE: So, we've been using this monitor for 6 months now and you know what? WE STILL LOVE IT! The monitor is basically keeping track of two 1+ kids during nap time (roughly 4 hrs per day) and we drag it all over the house. We also use the monitor when out in the backyard pool and the kid(s) are inside sleeping. The only issue is with heavy use the battery is right on the edge of being drained at the end of the day. But of course it includes a rechargeable battery so no problema! I've never had any video freezing problems or audio problems, nothing.

A little networking knowledge could be helpful in setup. For me these were insanely easy to setup and they work great - only had them active for 2 days now but, wow... I'm pretty impressed.
(I'm a veteran techie so, it's easy for me - if you have no networking knowledge - it could be tricky - get someone knowledgeable to help)
Everything was very easy to setup - getting the devices connected to wi-fi - a breeze
Getting them setup to email me with images on motion detection - super easy (with gmail account anyway)
Administration of the devices - at least as easy as any other network device setup
Night vision - very nice...
It's not all great stuff - the image is a little less that desirable but, enough to do what I need. I wanted a cheap security system - I bought a 2 pack of these and BAM - now I have cheap security for the front and back entrance- emails me pictures when motion detection is triggered.
I left these on in my office while waiting to finish painting the house so I can install them - the cats kept coming in and out of the room - so I got a good test run from both of these cams...
For the price I don't see how you can beat the feature list that these lil' guys come with.

I bought the master system and installed the external camera about 20' above my driveway. Installation was incredibly easy, and the camera worked well right away. It was simple for me to drill a hole through the house at an inconspicuous location and run the flat ethernet cable to the camera, so I didn't need to mount the power supply outdoors. Since it seemed to work well, I added an indoor camera in another area of the house, and it has also worked flawlessly.
The motion detection works well, and I'm receiving email alerts with snapshots when deliveries are made or whenever there's some activity on the driveway. I live in a rural area so I'm looking forward to catching some pictures of the animals that roam over our lot.
Since our internet ISP forces a double-NAT situation, we are unable to set up an externally-accessible web server at our house, so the technique Logitech uses here of pushing updates to their server (when motion is detected) is great for us. The $79 yearly fee doesn't seem excessive considering that you don't have to constantly have a server running at your house as other systems require.
I had some initial trouble with the iPhone app being unable to download recorded clips, but it seems to have "fixed itself" (maybe a problem on the server has been addressed?) and now works every time. An iPad app would be great, I hope Logitech is working on that...in the mean time you can run the iPhone app on the iPad in "2x" mode.
The Logitech forum for this product is useful and seems to be monitored by Logitech personnel. I get the impression that they're actively developing the software and that updates are frequent, which is a good sign.
All in all I'm very happy with the system and plan on getting more cameras. My only gripe is the lack of a Mac application, hence 4 starts instead of 5.

I have been in law enforcement for over 35 years. Recently I purchased a condo in Florida. I was looking around for some type of security camera system for my condo that I could review over the internet. Having a second home I wanted to be able to view the cameras every day to make sure my property was secure from theft and/or damage from mechanical failure or weather related problems. Through my work I was involved with several projects dealing with camera web based technology, i.e., cameras in schools, malls, banks etc. that could be viewed by an officer from his car computer.
These cameras are excellent, inexpensive and efficient little security devices that works well in my condo. First the setup is simple. The system comes with two wireless battery operated cameras, a network gateway with its own AC power adapter, four camera mounts for mounting your cameras, and an Ethernet cable. There is little computer system setup on the Vue network gateway. All you do is plug it into your router and synch the cameras. You are able to view immediately.
I have recently purchased the new cameras that have motion sensors, which enables the cameras to automatically record videos or snapshots when they've been triggered by movements. Sensitivity for each camera's motion sensor can be adjusted on the web page. In addition to the recordings, I can receive e-mail notifications whenever motion is detected. Also I'm able to share the cameras with my family so they can view the property as well. I have recently recorded an alligator in the lake outside my patio window.
Living over 3,000 miles away from my property in Florida and being able to view the cameras a couple of times a day makes our family feel more secure about our property.
