This review is from: Lorex LIVE SD9 Wireless Digital Security System - LW2902 (Camera)
I've been trying since the 1st week in January to resolve an issue with a camera which quit working. I've done EVERYTHING Lorex has asked of me, easter egged with Tech support for hours, finally got them to agree the camera was defective, faxed my receipt to Lorex, paid $14 to ship THEIR defective product back to them, they've had the defective camera for nearly 2 weeks now and I cannot get an answer back as to when, if ever, I will get my replacement shipped back to me. Worst customer service in the world. Go ahead and buy from Lorex if you must but you better pray your product never breaks because you will eat the cost.

Linksys WVC80N cam review:
Positives:
Supports 640x480 resolution at up to 30FPS. Don't buy an ip cam that doesn't support 640x480 (i.e. some of the Panasonic ones)
The low light level performance is good. This cam claims to have a better CMOS sensor that the previous model but it's still not all that great in low light (if you want good images in low light you need an IP cam with a CCD sensor but this adds cost and complexity). This is not a Day/Night cam that has infrared LEDs that provide illumination in completely dark areas. (You need to have some level of lighting). Still, I think it's better in low light that some other IP cams.
Cam supports wired Ethernet AND 802.11n (Draft) WiFi. 802.11n is better for supporting multiple cameras (but see negative below).
Works very well with (3rd party) BlueIris software
The camera can time stamp the video with the current time/date. It can also display any text on the video (such as location etc) that you enter)
The user manual PDF is very well written and goes into technical details that other manufacturers leave out (such as CGI commands to control the camera without using the web interface).
Very reliable, especially with a wired connection. I run these 24/7 without having to periodically reset cams, which is a problem that seems to plague other IP cams.
Negatives:
There does not seem to be a way to manually focus the camera lens. If you have stuff going on more than a few feet away you will not see details!
The power adapter cord is way too short! The cord SHOULD be at least 10-12 feet long. I never understand why manufacturers always give you a short cord - do they feel that you always have a power outlet where you want to place a cam?
I don't like the mounting bracket. Two screws (NOT INCLUDED - why?!) must first be screwed into the mounting surface and the mounting bracket slides into the screws and held by friction or gravity (depending on mounting position). This is in contrast to other cam mounts which must be screwed down and are unremovable without tools (this one isn't). In addition it is too easy for anyone to move the cam's position by hand. Also the mount makes the cam stand out more (more noticeable). There should be a cardboard template included to make it easier to drill the mounting holes for the screws (they must be spaced apart correctly otherwise the bracket will not fit). Also the design of the mount makes it impossible for the cam to mount against a vertical surface (side of bookshelf) and show a straight level display, because the side of the cam bumps into the base of the mount.
This cam is labeled as using draft 802.11n technology and features 1 internal antenna (according to the datasheet). For maximum range and speed 802.11n uses MIMO which requires multiple antennas. This may explain why the range may not be as good as it could be.
The cam's web interface should feature a WiFi scan feature which also displays all detected SSIDs, channel # and % signal level (so you can get an idea of signal strength and channels in use by other routers). Trendnet WiFi IP cams have this feature and it's a VERY useful one. It's disappointing that other manufacturers don't include this feature.
The image options web page allows brightness/sharpness to be set, but it doesn't display the image at the same time so you can observe changes.
The webpage "Live Video" displays video only using MJPEG, not MPEG. Other cameras (such as Trendnet) allow selection of video type. This does not mean that the camera only supports MJPEG but that's all you can get via the default webpage).
Comments on other reviewer's problems:
"Range problems" - WiFi connections are tricky things, in that there are many factors to consider. Interference from other routers, distance/positioning of both router/cams, router firmware, cam firmware, MIMO capabilities of both, type of walls between router & cam etc. The only constant to reliable working WiFi is experimentation - sometimes another router or cam will work better in a given situation. Wired Ethernet gives the most reliable results but isn't always convenient. If the web interface displayed signal levels it would be easier to troubleshoot wireless problems. Also this camera should have 2 antennas for MIMO support.
Overall I think this is a decent camera for the price (less than one one five). However many improvements that I've listed can be made via firmware so hopefully this camera will be improved. And how about a True 802.11n MIMO version of this camera?
OCT2011 UPDATE: Just wanted to say a few more things. With regards to reliability these cams are rock solid with a WIRED connection. With a WiFi connection there have been a few times that the WiFi has "locked up" and the cam needed to be power reset. This seems to be related to distance from the router and I have seen it on the cams using WiFi that are located furthest. Like I mentioned above it's unfortunate that there is no sort of site survey that displays signal strength etc so you could troubleshoot this. Also, you may want to check out the TRENDnet TV-IP602WN ProView Wireless Pan/Tilt/Zoom Internet Surveillance Camera as a more expensive alternative. Hope this review has been helpful!

What's in the box? This review is from: Logitech Alert 700e Outdoor Add-On Security Camera with Night Vision (Electronics)
I started out back in the end of April trying to find some security camera to monitor problems I had with some neighbors. My first one was the Logitech indoor one, figuring I'd just hang it in the window on that side of the house and that would be sufficient. But my initial attempts met with failure, and disappointment on a number of levels. I wrote a 2 star review of the indoor master system because of the things that just didn't work. I tried three other systems after that, all ending even worse. About the time I was trying the fourth system, I received an email from the guy in charge of their quality division saying he had seen my review and wanted to know if I was willing to try again, since they wanted to use the problems I had to help them tweak things and deliver a better product. The fact that he contacted me simply because of the review I wrote intrigued me, and since I was not at all satisfied with any of the other systems I tried, I gratefully accepted the offer of help. So I picked up another system, this one their External master system. I went through the setup the same way I did the first time, and hit almost all of the same problems. Errors about updates and unable to get to the internet from the software, problems with the iPhone and iPad apps not connecting right, and the fact that I use my media center computer as the "master" that gets all the recordings, but still wanted to view it from another PC that ended up mucking up some things. But they helped walk me through the issues one by one, and got the system up the way I wanted it. The update problem turned out to be something they heard about from a few other people, and said that just renaming the folder for now that had the update program in it would alleviate the errors, and that they were working on a resolution for it for the next software version. They then walked me through some changes to the INI file on my second PC so that I could use it to view things without having it interfere with anything, since the cameras get their settings, download the video files, and everything based on the PC that touches them. I tried to minimize the problem by basically duplicating everything exactly with my second computer but that actually caused as many issues as it prevented. By basically nulling out everything I could in the INI file now, I can connect to the system without it causing the problems it was.
They didn't do anything specific for the iPhone issues I had, but over the course of a few days, eventually it started working more often than not, and the troubles I had were enough for them to graciously put me into their beta testing for the next version, which I am running now and is night and day compared to the old version, both in options as well as in reliability.
One trick I ended up learning - when adding a second PC, don't set up as a site, even a site with the same name. You can cancel that part and just view then. If you don't, like I didn't the first time, you'll end up with a second "site" on the logitech alert website when you view your cameras. I was seeing two sites, both named the same, but only one with cameras. It took a bit of beating up but finally I was able to remove that second null site.
I had a problem with the base module that plugs into the switch actually causing a broadcast storm or something since after it was running for 18 hours or so, everything on my home network would no longer work, although my VOIP phone system did. That was the only thing going straight into the router though, not into the switch everything else collapses into. As soon as I unplugged the network cable from the switch, everything started working again and a quick power cycle of the network piece of the Logitech setup would let it work again for another 18 or so hours. They promptly sent me a replacement and had me ship mine back to them for testing, and it has not happened again.
The cameras run a bit more toasty than I would've been comfortable with normally, but even the three I have outside now, in the 100 degree weather we've had recently, have had no problems. I'm even thinking it might help me in the winters, if the heat is enough to dissipate any snow that ends up on them...
The night vision is quite impressive, although the detail isn't as good as it is during the day. But it's easy to see and recognize people even from 30 feet away as they walk down the sidewalk here, although that recognition is mostly from size, shape, and movement recognition, not face. But close up the faces are easily visible and recognizable. The problem with night vision for me is bugs. Seems a lot of insects love the little red emitting spots on the front of the cameras, so they play havoc with the motion detection. If you leave it set to record during the night, you'll see a lot of bug activity. But i've also got some great shots now of lightning strikes nearby that I pulled from the recordings the cameras have made during storms at night, so it's not all negative.
Motion detection overall is really the biggest weakness it has I think. The majority of my recordings are things like bees flying past, or birds. There is an option for sensitivity, but it's never made any difference for my setup. The one thing I'm hoping for in a future upgraded software version is a way to specify the size of something to trigger the recording, so that the birds hopping slowly across my front lawn doesn't get the recording going every time, but the person does. Also, rain storms, headlights flashing across the lawn, or lightning all will trigger the recording. Even the reflection of a car on the wet sidewalk as it drives past will be recorded if it's in a motion zone.
Another nice bonus I hadn't known when I started was that the system will backfill a bit when recording is triggered, so when something crosses the motion detection zone, it'l actually also add to the recording about 5 seconds or so of the cache prior to the trigger activity. That way you can see what "lead up" to whatever happened within the motion zones, and it also does the same for after, giving a few more seconds after the motion zones have been left.
Since I have it running on my media center PC, one feature I like is that when it's open on the desktop, if you're using a camera with sound enabled, you hear the sound, but if you minimize it, it stops playback of the sound through your system - which is nice for someone like me that is using the system on the same thing they use to control their TV. Little touches like that really help show how much effort they've put into polishing this system. And the fact that I could email them saying "this is happening," and get a reply saying they've found whatever it is to be an issue, and are already addressing it for the next release...
In fact, the system has impressed me so much that I now have a total of four cameras on my system, three external and one internal. And it is amazing how much of a deterrent they are for the stupid actions of my neighbors. After getting the first two cameras installed, my life here has become much more enjoyable just for that factor alone.
In the back and forth email correspondences I've had with two of the people involved with the product now, the things that aren't present or not quite what I would have preferred I've found are at least on the table for changes, if not already actively being changed. One of their big requests is an easy way to stop recordings. It's simple to stop the alerts and emails, but recordings you have to go and set the sensitivity all the way to Zero individually on each camera to disable them from recording motion. I was originally doing that every night just so I didn't have to watch the bugs when I went through the videos, but I'm hoping that since it's such a popular request that one of the feature enhancements in the future will be an easy way to set a schedule, so that, say, from 12 to 3 on Saturdays when I cut the grass it knows not to be throwing hundreds of files on my hard drive of me doing so. Another thing I would love to see is a way for another computer to view directly the feed without causing some of the issues I've hit because of the commander software trying to update settings in the firmware of the cameras. Although even better than that, would be a way for an iPhone or iPad to directly access it to view realtime, since with either the software or just a web browser, you're seeing a delayed feed due to the fact that the traffic has to pass from your site to the logitech servers, then to your device you are viewing with. So there's anywhere form a 5 to 10 second delay to as long as 35 seconds I hit one weekend. They've told me that the direct view from an iPad or iPhone is something they're considering. I hope that one becomes a reality since I think that would be a great feature. Another possibility they're talking about is a Mac version of the software, which I would like as well since I run the system on a Mac Mini that is running Windows 7 boot camp for my Media center, but I also have a new 15" Macbook Pro that I'd like to use more than just the web version on.
I spent about 2 1/2 months using the system and the default free web service, but I got on the $79 program a week or so ago, and have to say that I wish I had done so sooner. It made it so much better to be able to control everything from anywhere else. One of the nice things with the iPhone and iPad is that the software doesn't change, so you don't have to download another version. it simply offers the extra features if you subscribed to it, no new app needed. And even from a web page, you have pretty much all the control and settings options that you have from the commander software. It's very well done and certainly something I'll keep subscribing to as long as I have my system, especially if the newer versions have some of the fixes and additions I hope to see.
I love being able to see all around my house, in every direction, from the couch. And not just to see what is happening with the people and kids around here, but even for weather. We've had a lot of storms lately, and I can easily see when the bad stuff is heading this way from any compass point now through the cameras. It even helps at night when I'm laying in bed reading on my iPad and wonder if I closed the garage door or not. I just open the software on the iPad and take a look at the camera showing my driveway, since the field of view includes enough of the garage that I can see the bottom of the door if it's closed, or the seam in the garage if it's not.
And when I have it on my TV, it's easy to jump full screen for a nice shot of all four cameras at once, or just double click any of the camera views to bring that one full screen by itself. Double click again to go back to the four screen view, and pick another. Changing cameras positions in the grid display is as easy as simply clicking it and dragging it to another square.
Field of vision is very impressive, and the ability to zoom, pan, all digitally, so that people you may be monitoring aren't even aware of it, since there's no motor moving a camera around, no lens spinning as it zooms, like so many other systems out there had. I'm amazed at how much I can see to the sides, although there is the fisheye bending effect at the very edges of it.
If you have a camera that ends up out of time sync for some reason, the trick is to get onto the windows machine, go to the time settings, and if it wasn't already, set it to sync with an external internet time source. Close the Logitech Commander software, then do the "sync now" option. When it shows that it successfully synced the time, reopen the Logitech Commander software, and the camera should now be in sync again.
I have to say that the people at Logitech that I've dealt with have been top notch and helpful way above and beyond the call of duty. It was their initiative that got me to try the system again, and helped me work through my issues and concerns enough to now have four cameras going. I've got several clients (I build networks and support servers and such) that have seen me checking out things remotely and are interested as well now in using these, since the ease of using the electrical system in place of running coax cables is blatantly obvious to them.
I'm ultimately very glad that I had bad experiences with the other systems I tried, so that I did end up coming back to these logitech units. None of the software or features on the other units had the power and flexibility I have now. And if Logitech ups the ante by doing some of the things I'd like to see added, then it's going to put them so far out of reach of the competition that there will no longer even be a way to compare them to the others.
Edit - My comment about the idiots next door having stopped their depredations because of the cameras doesn't seem to hold as true anymore, evidently they read the review and today decided to be even more idiotic. I finally got tired, called the police, and their "but we didn't do anything but ride around" defense fell flat when I could show the police exactly what they were doing and saying for the last few hours. So while it may not have stopped the stupid behavior, at least it helped show it when needed for law enforcement.

It doesn't matter what Swann system you purchase. If you need customer or tech support, you're going to be out of luck.
I have purchased two different Swann surveillance systems and while the systems themselves are nice: - good picture quality, fairly easy to connect, etc. - Getting the systems set up for remote viewing is always a problem and trying to get ahold of their tech support to get help is IMPOSSIBLE. When you call, you're left on hold literally for hours before someone answers, if someone answers at all. Sometimes, the outgoing message will even say that their help desk is closed, when the hours dictate that they should be open. I also tried their online live chat help and 3 times after 15 minutes of waiting for someone to connect with me to help there, they disconnect me from that, too. So then I resort to emailing for help. I threaten to take the system back to the store if I don't get help and I finally receive a reply from a tech, apologizing and stating that if I give them a phone number and a time at which to call me back, they will return my call at that time and help me. I reply back with a phone number and a 30 minute window of time that they can call me back - being very specific about the time zone I'm referring to, as well. - I receive no such call back from them.
I GIVE UP!
I will never, never, never buy another Swann product, because what good does it do to have their products, if you can never get help from them when you need it. It's too bad, too, because they do make a nice system.

This review is from: Foscam Pan & Tilt Wireless IP Camera with 9bdi antennas 2 pack FI8918W (Electronics)
The vendor, has since my purchase, refunded an adequate amount for the missing 9dbi antennas. The cameras work just fine. You will NOT be getting 60fps at 4CIF. You will get a fairly decent 15-20ish fps at 640x480. The image seems to be a 320x200 extended. Movement alarms work great. The image works great when object stops. Movement capture seems to blur a bit, especially in low light. The range with the default antennas is fairly pitiful. I used an Apple Airport Express as an AP to extend the wireless network up one floor of my townhouse for the camera. (150 feet, line of site, maybe) The encoder has 'about' 1-2 seconds of latency from capture to IP display.
Setup is fairly straight forward. I would recommend some networking experience. If you plan to view this through a router remotely, then even more so for NAT and port translations/forwarding. MAC filters are easy as long as you remember that the ethernet port and the wireless port have two different IDs. The ethernet MAC is marked better than the wireless, it is marked however. The default firmware is not always the same between the two cameras, so a function or two maybe different, or even non-functional. Once corrected, it is just fine. Night vision is awesome, however better for an indoors application, as is the camera itself.
BIG NOTE: Without Windows IE, most of the advanced functions are impossible. Viewed from Safari/Firefox, not 'fully' controlled. (requires: ActiveX) *yuk*
Four stars for the lack of wireless range and a fairly clunky setup. However; four stars because it does what it claims, for the most part, and at a good price. Overall, good price, ok software, good hardware. Make sure you purchase legitimate Foscam, lots of copycats using their name. Either way.. Foscam should start selling the 9dbi antennas WITH the camera or adjust their marketing!!!

This review is from: D-Link DGL-4300 Wireless 108G Gaming Router (Personal Computers)
Living in Alaska presents a lot of issues with networking and power fluctuations. I could not stay connected for more than a couple of hours at a time with other routers I was purchasing. I do a lot of online gaming, DAoC, SB, WoW, etc and randomly losing connections during large battles really became frustrating. After buying Linksys router and giving up on I decided to try the DGL-4300 gaming router, to see if I could stay online for more than a couple of hours. Installation was a breeze and the first large PvP battle I fought in with 50+ people on screen I noticed that not only was the lag I had been receiving with the Linksys routers non-existent, but I never once became disconnected for an entire evening of intense fighting. I am sold 100% that this router is worth every penny. I spend top money to buy high-end computer equipment that I can overclock to its maximum potential, but I always ended up buying cheap routers. This gaming router lives up to the hype and helps my equipment produce maximum online gaming potential.

Simulated TiVo interface shown here - Slingbox works with over 5,000 devices. The SlingCatcher allows you to access any device connected to your Slingbox* on another TV in your home or even a TV in another location.
DVRs are great, and anyone who has ever used one can't go back to the old way of watching TV. But if you have multiple TVs in your house, your DVR content is usually stuck on one of them. The solution? Hook up a Slingbox to the DVR and a SlingCatcher to another TV. Instantly you can watch and control your DVR and all its programming from that TV too--with no additional monthly fees.

Project Internet Video from Your PC to Your TV
SlingProjector software for 32-bit Windows XP and Vista* lets you select any window on your PC to project full screen onto your TV. This is ideal for watching an ever increasing amount of Internet video content on your TV instead of a laptop screen. Clips from YouTube or Hulu, full episodes from CBS or NBC , even streaming feature length movies from NetFlix can all be projected to your big screen, so you can sit back on the couch and enjoy. SlingProjector works with most web sites and video players.** Check out a few of these examples:
Everyone knows YouTube. Whether you find the millions of hours of user-generated video funny, disgusting, educational, or a good way to veg out on a Sunday afternoon, now you can easily share your favorite moments with family and friends on your big screen TV rather than hunkered around a tiny laptop.
Hulu is a popular video Web site with lots of clips, full-length TV episodes, and movies. Using SlingProjector, simply select the video frame and watch away!
If you have a NetFlix account, you already know you can stream thousands of full-length TV shows and movies to your computer. That's great if you're a lonely guy living in a 6' x 6' box. But if you want to watch a show or movie with your family, you probably want to sit back on the couch with a bowl of popcorn. Now you can. And you never have to wait for your DVDs to arrive in the mail.* 64-bit Windows XP/Vista and Macintosh support not currently available. SlingProjector is not supported when run in a virtual environment like Parallels, VMware or Microsoft Virtual PC. ** Projection of HD-DVD and Blu-ray video from a PC to SlingCatcher is not supported. This review is from: Sling Media SlingCatcher SC100-100 Universal Media Player for TV (Electronics)
I really wanted for this gadget to be useful. I have been waiting for it to release for a long time now and was particularly interested in the slingprojector capabilities to be able to stream Internet video from sites like Hulu, Netflix etc. to my TV.
I hooked it up via HDMI and gigabit ethernet to my router. The setup was pretty painless. I was able to connect and view my slingbox at a remote site effortlessly. I was a little disappointed at how bad the video looked but attributed that to upload bandwidth from the remote site as opposed to any deficiency with the slingcatcher.
Then the problems really began. The slingprojector software recommends projecting a window at a time as opposed to the entire screen since this is supposed to improve video performance. Window sizes however are limited to 1024/768 which means you have to resize etc in a non-intuitive manner.
Video quality despite various performance changes I made was choppy and unwatchable. I stream video to my apple tv all the time so I know that the network supports high quality streaming. There is nothing I could do to render a decent video image. Even the regular computer screen i.e. non video tasks exhibited a lot of lag between the keystroke on my machine and when it showed up on the monitor. The slingprojector software is also a performance hog and noticeably slowed down the machine.
Finally, to add insult to injury the computer lost its connection to the slingprojector and despite reboots would not connect again. it took a reinstall of the client software and then a factory reset of the slingcatcher to get it to work again.
I will be returning it promptly. I guess it is fine to use as a standalone client to watch a remote slingbox but if you are buying for the sling-projector functionality as I did, I would be wary.
Sling Media SlingLink Turbo Powerline Kit
Product Description
Sling Media SlingLink Turbo Powerline Kit , Cisco Linksys Media Center Extender From the Manufacturer
Want to connect your Slingbox but your TV is in a different room than your router? Need a network connection for your computer or game console in an area where you have no wireless coverage? Want an easy-to-set-up networking solution that provides a fast connection and the best conditions for smooth video? SlingLink TURBO is a great solution.
A simple powerline Ethernet solution for your Slingbox and other devices. Click here for a larger image
1. Plug one SlingLink TURBO 1-Port into the wall near your router. 2. Plug in the other SlingLink TURBO wherever you have your Slingbox or other device(s) installed. Home Networking Made Simple Connectivity Anywhere in the Home
Slingbox is often located in an area that is not ideal for a wireless connection. Stereo equipment, a stereo rack, or lots of wires can cause a weak or fading Wi-Fi signal. SlingLink TURBO eliminates these problems and assures a high quality connection for your Slingbox or other network devices.
SlingLink TURBO offers great coverage in homes up to 3500 square feet and is a slim, low-profile device, for easy integration into your existing setup.
Best Connection and Signal Quality
By providing a direct, hard-wired connection from your router to your Slingbox or other devices, you'll limit the network interruption/interference or signal weakness that can go hand in hand with Wi-Fi, and get the best possible video from your Slingbox, and the most reliable connection for your other devices.
Connect All Your Devices to the Internet
The four-port SlingLink TURBO is ideal for providing a network connection to multiple devices, such as a satellite receiver, game console, or computer (for connecting a single device, use the simple one-port model). Expand your network and add up to 16 SlingLink devices (up to 64 networked devices) throughout your home.
How it Works
The SlingLink TURBO uses powerline networking technology to provide an Internet connection, using the electrical wiring in your house to create a network. The SlingLink TURBO 1-Port and 4-Port are plug-and-play devices, and are a breeze to set up, even when your router and devices are in separate rooms.
Just plug one SlingLink TURBO into an in-wall electrical outlet near your router, and plug the other SlingLink TURBO into an in-wall electrical outlet near your Slingbox or any other device that needs to be connected to the Internet.

This review is from: Sling Media SlingLink Turbo Powerline Kit ( SL200-100 ) (Personal Computers)
In a large (brand new 5-bedroom, 3500 sq ft house) it works pretty well. NOTE: my specific objective was to support a SlingBox (original) with cable Internet elsewhere in the house.
I've used SlingBox and SlingLink Turbo in two different configurations:
1. SlingBox connected directly to my router; SlingLink supporting other wired + wireless computers elsewhere in the house via a wireless router.
2. SlingLink connected the Internet and SlingLink broadcasting to SlingLink supporting my SlingBox and XBOX 360 as "slave" devices.
The first configuration is better (obviously) because SlingBox can "broadcast" up to a full 2.5Mbps over a LAN connection. The second configuration is better for everyday use since I get maximum Internet bandwidth on computers.
Findings:
1. Internet speed test dropped from 18-19Mbps down / 2.5Mbps up (Comcast w/ SpeedBoost) to 2100Mbps down / 800Kbps up.
2. SlingBox over SlingLink drops to 1.2Mbps (video quality is a bit choppy vs. perfectly smooth otherwise). I've had it spike to 1.6Mbps over the LAN.
3. Additionally SlingBox over the open Internet (original intended use) maxes out at 600kbps, which is a hair below what it was without SlingLink in the middle.
4. The only real "issue" with SlingLink is probably due to home wiring (i.e. on a semi-related note I had to re-wire every cable jack and replace the primary splitter that my electrical contractor originally installed because the cheap original hardware was so bad that ).
5. Newer SlingBoxes (AV/PRO/SOLO) may be more tolerant of "spotty" Ethernet connections, considering they have newer H.264 compression chips.
All in all I'm happy. Wireline Ethernet isn't perfect and would probably work a lot better in a condominium or smaller house. A larger house would/could justify multiple cable modems.

This review is from: Western Digital My Book Live 1 TB Personal Cloud Storage Drive (Personal Computers)
Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices mimic file servers on a network. However instead of a big computer, the NAS is roughly the size of a trade paperback. They are preferable to portable hard drives because multiple computers can access and save to them.
This WD device is easy to set up, and you can be registered, configured, and otherwise up and running in just a few minutes. I gave my assistant partial access to the drive, and password protected the rest. I also downloaded all the photos from my MacBook Pro onto it, which allowed me to use a free app for my iPhone and iPad to remotely access all of my pictures. Since those files are substantially more than carry around on either the phone or pad, this is a space savings bonanza.
The drive also works with Time Machine, a Leopard and Snow Leopard application that protects your Mac's data. Because I already have a Apple Time Capsule MC343LL/A 1TB Sim DualBand, it is a feature I am not using (Time Machine) only automatically synchs to one source).
The price is right and this NAS will not disappoint.

The Good
---------------
The technology works! Using a Sprint Air card I was able to keep tuned into my TV while driving in the country. This is probably the worst case scenario for remote reception. I was only getting about 100K download speed with occasional dropouts. No other streamer that I have tested would work under these conditions.
I was running 320-240 res under these conditions. With faster more stable connection you can run higher.
At home on my home network I run 640x480 resolution with a maximum stream rate of 6000Kbps with Near CD quality Audio.
It works! It works! It Works!!
The Bad
---------
This box did not come with a software CD or SVid cable. So I had to dig one up. I had the player software from SlingBox AV that I had tested. In any case you will need to download the latest software from the SlingMedia website. I had to dig up an aditional Svid cable.
The Ugly
---------
Couple things that I realy hate about the SlingBox technology.
-Max Res 640x480 res
-Only one connection allowed at a time. If you try to connect and someone else is watching the slingbox you will get a Buisy indication. Thats why it is called a Personal TV Viewer.
-No Recording Option available. There are some third party venders offering this at a cost of $49.
-Mobile Player software is not free. You must pay $29 for wach mobile device you want to install the player software on.
Final Thoughts
------------------
All this said, I still love the SlingBox. I had originaly purchased the Slingbox AV but found its connection options limited with out a pass through connection. I now have two devices set up. Dish Sat box and Panasonic E55 DVD recorder/player. I can remotely change the channel and start my recorder from anywhere in the world that I have an internet connection.
BTW this box retails for $179 and I picked mine up for $159. Thats only $30 more than I paid for the AV.
