I just got it a week ago and used it a few times. I was expecting it to be faster because it is a 36v, but the fact is it only has 1400RPM compared to the 18v's 1800RPM. It also had a lower torque rating then the 18v. The chuck is plastic, the 18v's is metal. And with the rebate Bosch is offering right now on the 18v tools you can get a free battery. I'm returning the the 36v and getting the 18v instead.

DEWALT DC728KA Heavy-Duty 14.4-Volt Ni-Cad

Product Description

DEWALT DC728KA Heavy-Duty 14.4-Volt Ni-Cad Review We weren't expecting a lot of power when we picked up this drill for the first time: It's terrifically light and compact. Boy, were we wrong—-this drill's got all the power and torque of the heavyweights. With a speed range of 440 to 1,400 rpm and 17 clutch settings, it also delivers 400 in./lbs. of torque. It handles a hole saw and Forstners beautifully with power to spare, and the balance in hand is perfect. But what sets this drill apart is its size and weight and how that translates to easier work for you. We've used some big-boy drills and imagined what a carpenter would feel like after eight hours of hoisting them; we have to say that this drill is the one we'd want on the job, whether it's electrical work, cabinetry, heating and cooling or woodworking, slipping easily into the tightest workspaces and really cutting down on fatigue. Another dimension is how easily it handles for women with smaller hands, because in addition to its size and weight, the drill's rubber grip is compact and comfortable. Auto tune-ups should keep this machine working for you for a long, long time. -- Kris Jensen-Van Heste

I have a 3/8" DeWalt Drill which was given to me by my son many years ago and I have gone through many batteries(which have become quite expensive).
I purchased this 1/2" DeWalt HD Drill which comes with 2 batteries for about the cost of the 2 batteries so basically I received the drill free, what a deal and it has the power to do everything I need it for and I can also use the extra battery in my other drill if I need too.

I purchased this drill (new) a couple years ago from a large retailer that had it on clearance at the time; the regular price was approx. $150 or $180. One of the first things I noticed about the drill was that it was made in Germany and that it appeared and felt very high quality. Even the cord and chuck key were of the highest quality I've seen on any drill. In addition, the hammering mechanism is ultra smooth... unlike my other B&D hammer drill. In addition, this drill cuts through cinder block like the proverbial knife through butter. It's a great hammer drill and a very good value at this price.

The PS30-2A 12-Volt Max 3/8-Inch Drill Driver offers:

  • 12-volt Litheon batteries for long-lasting power.
  • High torque-to-weight ratio.
  • Compact profile that fits into your tool pouch.
  • Two speeds for versatility.

With an ergonomic design, you'll stay comfortable on even the longest jobs. View larger. Easily drills holes up to 1/2 inch in diameter.View larger. Lightweight enough for over-the-head work. View larger. 12-Volt Litheon Batteries for Long-Lasting PowerThe PS30-2A gets its power from Litheon batteries, which allow more battery charges and provide longer runtime with no memory effect--meaning the batteries don't need to be drained before charging. The batteries can also be taken out of the charger before charging is complete.

Other benefits include: electronic cell protection that guards against overheating, overload, and deep discharge; and no loss of power from the first to last screw or hole. Best of all, these batteries will fully charge in 30 minutes and will be at 85% capacity in just 15 minutes.

Compact Drill/Driver for Most Common ApplicationsThe PS30-2A is a powerful professional compact drill/driver with a high torque-to-weight ratio. It features an innovative design that can readily handle 90% of common applications, and its 3/8-inch single-sleeve chuck enables secure use of round shaft bits.

Lightweight and Compact for Flexibility and ComfortAt just 2.4 pounds--50% smaller than a competing NiCad drill--this compact tool is the only one of its kind that fits into your tool pouch, making it ideal for performing over-the-head continuous work and accessing tight corners. Its streamlined shape and size minimize wrist and hand fatigue, allowing you to work longer and more comfortably.

Fast, Powerful Operation for Heavy-Duty JobsOffering a gear speed of 400/1,100 RPM and providing 220 in./lbs. of torque, this drill/driver easily drills holes up to 1/2-inch in diameter without stalling. It also remains cool to the touch, even after heavy-duty jobs.

Two Speeds for Improved Precision and VersatilityThe PS30-2A provides two speeds for versatility and drilling and driving. 20+1 clutch settings enable precision driving and prevent over-torque in soft base materials, giving you the flexibility you need to complete a range of jobs. In addition, the trigger is responsive, so you maintain optimum control over the drill speed and avoid stripping screws or splintering wood.

Robust, Durable Design with Convenient Bit Holder and LEDAble to maintain functionality after being dropped, the PS30-2A stands up to rough-and-tough conditions. It also offers the convenience of a universal bit holder so everything you need to complete a project remains close at hand, as well as an LED to increase visibility in low-light or enclosed areas.

ProVantage GuaranteeThe PS30-2A comes with the ProVantage three-year protection plan, which guarantees two years of battery protection and one year of tool protection. Under this plan, you can receive two years of free battery replacements, tool replacement for one year, and a free tool repair package for the second and third years.

I was initially pleased with the first one of these I received -- right until the gears stripped while drilling into some soft wood. From then on, the high-speed gear would commonly strip under load, whether drilling into resinous pine or a #8 countersink. I contacted Bosch customer support, who advised me to make sure the torque limiter was on the "drill" position (which, of course, it was). They never responded to my reply. I finally decided that this was not as designed, but to give the model another chance. I returned it to Amazon, who had another one delivered to me the next day (free-of-charge). The new one has a motor that sounded slightly different than the first, and exhibits none of the problems. I have to wonder whether they had a bad run.

Overall, the drill works as expected. I use it as my primary drill now, saving the heavy-duty one for high-torque jobs. The smaller handle is a trade-off -- it's much easier to get into tighter spaces, but obviously won't stand upright. The one-hand chuck works surprisingly well, but is not as deep as the chuck on a standard-sized drill, so expect to tighten it a bit more to prevent the bit from slipping in some applications. The light works a expected, but isn't terribly bright, and is easily obscured by the workpiece. Charging time is as-advertised; I haven't managed to run out of juice before the second battery was ready to go.

Overall, I'm very pleased.

Man I hate being the first to review anything. First I can see from the numbers and percentages that many of these are being purchased. I had serious reservations mainly due to the cost, after all its a freakin screwdriver. I had a black and decker that lasted a long time and it came time to replace the battery and it was the same price as the driver so that was just stupid. I have other good cordless stuff like dewalt and makita. Dewalt does not have any ion drivers so that was out. The one driver dewalt has weighs like 80 pounds or so it looks. I purchased the single speed white ion Makita thinking that would do the trick, but no. The RPM are so high it was like a drill all the time, great build and torque though. This one while costing out the butt seems to fill the bill. It has half the torque of the white one but at least it can be controlled. The settings for torque are nice so you dont strip out delicate screws like in electronic stuff. The one thing I wish it had was the led light should stay on for a few seconds after being activated like the other makita tools. This one is just an on and off switch. Oh well what do you want for a hundren and eighty bucks huh. I still cant get over that fact. Oh well its done and it works and it will last a long time.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program
(What's this?) This Dewalt screwdriver is a perfect example of "the right tool for the right job". I have an embarrassingly extensive collection of cordless drills and drivers. The problem has always been that one works great in one situation, but not in another. The large drill motors have plenty of driving power, but are heavy, bulky and impossible to get into tight places. On the other hand, the tubular shaped cordless drivers with the breakover handle usually get to the screw but either don't have the power required or the torque required makes them very hard to hold onto. This tool takes care of the job from every angle. There is plenty of power, plenty of torque and great ergonomics that keep the driver stable in your hand. It is very light for it's size, but not in a "cheaply made" kind of way. The variable speed trigger gives great control from dead slow, to full speed with plenty of increments in between. The three LEDs provide great illumination on the fastener, without shadows and dark spots. This really is a great tool.

I've waited for about 3 months of use before writing this review. After looking at Lowes and Home Depot getting hands on with the drills and touching for quality, grip, ergonomics, weight, features, soft/hard/no case, etc... I narrowed it down pretty easily to Milwaukee or the Home Depot's Rigid brand. The Rigid has a LIFETIME warranty so it was really, really tempting for my practical side. However, even though Milwaukee only had a 5-year warranty, I loved the quality of craftmanship from just looking at and feeling the drill. Quality materials, great rubber grip, damn sexy of a drill. Dewalt looks/feels like Harbor Freight quality, I would NEVER buy a DeWalt, nor would I buy a Kawasaki. Now, Makita is made in Japan, and was impressed with the power of it and it rated pretty high, but didn't like the cheaper plastic, nor its looks, nor its case. ANYWAY, back to Milwaukee vs. Rigid. I've already discussed the warranty differences, but I need to mention that Milwaukee came with a nice hard plastic case which is fabulous!! What does Rigid offer? A cheap nylon bag?? Really? Like I want my drill clinking around in a bag banging against my charger, etc... I made my choice with the Milwaukee and boy am I glad I did! I LOVE LOVE LOVE this drill! :) This is the 2602-22 with the larger battery. I think the 2601-22 has the smaller battery, but why on Earth would you do that? Would it make the drill too heavy for you? Man up you wimp! Its really not that heavy and it feels great in your hand, a nice weight distribution and it fits like a glove! It really set this drill apart. The charges last a very long time, with two batteries, your set for any professional project. Anyway, I love this drill so much that I'm on Amazon again (writing this review for you) and to find ANOTHER Milwaukee drill that is much more compact for those tight spaced jobs where this drill may be too big. So, I'm going to get a compact, 12V probably tiny little Milwaukee junior to be my little brother to this 2602-22 drill of mine. I just get so exited when there is a project that uses this drill. Can't wait to fire it up and check off some item's on my "honey-do" list. Sweet Power Tool Love!! :)

This drill was used while finishing a basement, especially boring through floor joists and 2x4's to install wiring.

It was more than powerful enough and the LED proved to be more than a novelty - it ws very handy when sticking the drill into tight spots!

The only knock I have against it is the same for all Makita drills: the chuck will not stay tightened for more than a few minutes and continually has to be retightened. My Milwaukee, Sears and DeWalt drills all stay tight without applying gorilla-torque.

Other than that, this is a very good and easy to control tool.

First let me say that I have many cordless Dewalt tools (including several drills). My brother bought one of these drills and I was impressed with how light weight and balanced it was compared to the older Dewalts. We used his on some very light duty work and I liked it so I ordered one.

Mine failed on the second day of using it. I don't believe I got a lemon. I just think that when people use it on hard duty work, they will find out it is a weak drill. I was drilling a dryer vent hole into concrete block/brick with a masonry hole saw. The first day of using it, both batteries went dead in about one or two minutes of hard drilling. The second day I used them was to drill more on the same hole. This time the 1'st battery went dead quick again, then the internals of the drill stripped out before the second battery went dead. Also, while drilling, if the hole saw bind at all, the battery would cut out. I would have to release the trigger for a second then reengage. It cut out way too easy.

I know some people will be thinking that this is just too hard of a job for a cordless hammer drill. I finished the job using my older NICAD Dewalt hammer drill. I would say I was probably getting around 15 or 20 minutes on a battery with my old Dewalt 18V hammer drill. It did the job fine.

Thankfully, Amazon stepped up to the plate and refunded me without any hassle. They even paid return freight. Great Company!

I still am considering getting a new one of these drills for light duty work (like running wood screws) because it is so light and compact. If I do, there is no way I will use it on anything that will give it a workout.

I really liked certain aspects of the drill, but unfortunately was still forced to return it and get something else.

I'll start with the good stuff. First off, the weight and feel was perfect, exactly what I was looking for. I'm a sculptor, so I need something light and compact when I am working all around a piece, sometimes in hard to reach, uncomfortable positions. The LED light is good in that it stays on for a little while after it is pushed. More manufacturers should add this feature. It doesn't center exactly on the bit tip, but the way it's positioned under the chuck, like all the drills I've seen, I don't think it will ever be perfect. The power is fantastic and it's the only compact I've seen with 450lbs of torque. I doubt I will ever need that much, since I'm not drilling or screwing into concrete or anything like that, but it could be useful for some people. The charger is the fastest I've seen at 15 minutes. I timed it and it really does charge in or under 15 minutes.

Now I have to talk about the reason I returned it for something else and few other negatives. I bought it at Home Depot, I like to get a feel for tools I buy and they had a power tools sale going on at the time. So I picked one of these up and tested it at home for about a day. I noticed instantly that there was some vibration I wasn't used to in drill. When I looked at the chuck I noticed it was wobbling a bit. I put a 1 1/4" spade bit in as I was drilling holes at the time. I spun it and looked at the tip of the bit, man this thing was wobbling all over the place. By my calculations it had a 1/8" wobble. That might not sound like much, but try to drill a big hole in plastic or a small hole through metal and see what happens. I decided to try and drill a hole out with the spade bit since I had it on anyway. I used a scrap piece of hard plastic as that was the material I was working with presently. Now I knew the bit was ok as I had drilled out some nice clean holes in some other plastic using my old corded Ryobi drill. After trying it out with various speeds and settings, the results were uneven holes, some larger than they should be and chipped edges. The drill was shaking and vibrating like you wouldn't believe too. So I take it back and get another one. After I get it home I test it out and guess what, same results. I even try to drill a small 1/16" hole through some sheet metal. After it flew across the metal for a minute it finally caught and started going in. Man, this bit was shaking back and forth, the whole drill shaking like crazy. I was afraid the bit was going to break off and fly into my eye. So back to Home Depot I go. This time I show the hardware guy and see what he has to say. Maybe I've just gone crazy and am being overly critical. He pops in a spade bit and even he can see the wobble and knows this isn't right. I tell him this my second one, so we take a new one off the shelf and open it up. He pops the spade bit in that one and guess what, same wobble. We decide to test out the comparable Milwaukee compact lithium drill to see if this is just something all the cordless compact drills share. He pops the spade bit into the Milwaukee pulls the trigger and no wobble, smooth as butter. He says maybe they got a bad pallet and could check to see if there was a new skid of the Makitas in the back. I decided to not take anymore chances and swapped out for the Milwaukee.

My reasoning is this is a Makita, not a Skil. It's supposed to be a quality product from a quality manufacturer, I should not have to go through 3 different ones to get a good one. I suppose this may be the world we live in now that everything is made in China, but I think I took more than enough chances on this drill.

Also Makita, don't be so cheap to not add a bit holder and belt clip, come on now.

This may be an isolated incident and I don't want to badmouth a good tool, but I can only comment on my experience. To all the people that are happy with the Makita, I'm glad. To anyone looking to buy one, I suggest you test it out in the store first to make sure there aren't any problems like I had.

On a side note, I didn't have the drill long enough to experience the battery problems some people have had. I don't know if that problem has been fixed or not. The batteries seemed good for the time I used it.
