I needed a close quarters drill for working on my sailboat, and this new Milwaukee does the job nicely. My first impression was that it felt large in my hand, but I've quickly grown used to it. I'm very impressed by the precision of the variable speed trigger - it's very easy to drill slowly at first and then accelerate as the drill bit bites. The drill has a nice quality chuck, and the ergonomics of the grip are very good. It feels like a quality, well built drill. Highly recommended.

I discovered the Milwaukee 5380-21 when I owned an old 3/8" corded drill and wanted to get into the 1/2" drill category. I was not looking for a hammer drill but found the added expense quite modest when compared with the ability to hammer into masonry which being a relatively new homeowner I realized I would have need of this function. I have drilled weep holes in a retaining wall and drilled pilots for tapcon fasteners with this drill, with ease. It is very powerful drill and is an excellent twist drill. I very much like the keyed chuck with a drill this robust. The support handle can be rotated 360 degrees and twists on and off the drill in seconds. This is my third Milwaukee tool and the quality of the tool's construction and storage case is excellent as always.

This is my 2nd one. The 1st Ive had for 6 years and have used to drill, bore, screw, and hammer drill thousands of times and it still works. My batteries are shot so the drill smokes when using so I replaced it with this new one. With the new batteries the old drill work fine again but I'm keeping the new one for in home stuff and using the old one for farm fences and dirty work. Simply one of the best tools Ive ever owned. I have owned this drill for a couple of years now and agree with other reviewers' comments. You have to respect the power abd durability of this drill.
I dropped the drill about 6' to 7' down onto the opposing side of a roof I was working from. As the drill was still plugged in, I pulled it up the roof by the cord. There were a few scratches in the case (from impacting the shingles), but that was all as far as damage was concerned. It still ran like a top.
This drill is not one I use often; my cordless drills get most of the day-to-day action. But when you need what this drill can deliver--incredible torque, and relatively low speed, this is the tool to go with. A co-worker recommended this to me before I bought it and I must say he was right.
If you drill metal or run big diameter hole saws, your search for a drill is over.

My only gripe on this tool is the trigger. It may work fine for others, but it just doesn't seem to be that user friendly for me. I'm used to a single triger, with a FWD/REV selector switch. It is a bit large, but works perfectly, is powerful, and has a long battery life. I used it on wheel lugs, up to 3/4 in. bolts. I recommend it.

I have been using the Makita 18 volt impact driver and bhp 451 drill/driver for 4 years and added the bhp 454 a year ago. I dropped the bhp 451 off a ladder and the gears jammed so I bought the bhp 454 to replace it. Latter I took the bhp 451 apart and put it back together and it works again. The impact driver is the best way to drive screws and tighten /loosen bolts and nuts of any tools that I have used. It sinks deck screws like going into butter. I purchased 4 Lithium ion batteries 4 years ago. I use them every day. One of the 4 died after three years and I replaced it. I have been overall very happy with the batteries. After 4 years they have less capacity or run time per charge but still very usable. The chuck on the bhp 451 wore out after three years and loosens while I am drilling. The same chuck is on the bhp 454 and it wore out after 1 year, probably because of the extra power. My question is has any one found a better chuck to put on this drill? Very satisfied except for the chuck. Other drills might survive a fall better but will wear you out with the extra weight.

I couldn't get my drill into a very tight spot, so I ordered the new Bosch 12 Volt PS10-2A Impact Driver. Needless to say, I was not disappointed. The drill fit into the tight spot and had plenty of power to drill the holes through some pretty tough laminate flooring material and on into the plywood subfloor. I own a Bosch portable table saw and a Bosch sander, and I am also very happy with their performance.

When my cousin first bought his 12v set, I thought he had just wasted his money... I couldn't understand what he would use them for (outside of building barbie doll houses).... Over time of watching him on various job sites, I decided to give them a try... I realized that in many cases, I didn't need the extra power or speed (and thus extra weight) of my 18v drills... And now my 12v set has become the primary drills in my tool bag.. Don't get me wrong, I still keep my 18's close by...
The battery seems to really last, and the impact drill does just about anything my 18v could (granted at a slower speed)... I love the LED light, comfortable grip, belt clip, and the weight!! The chuck on the drill can get frustrating at times... Seems to slip no matter how hard you tighten it... But if you're main work is finish carpentry, put away the 18's and move over to these... If however your more along framing then I think these will be a bit slow and might want to stay with the 18v version..

its a nice gun, worked with a guy with the new milwakee and this one is alot lighter, the light is great, lots of power
the bad:
the case leaves alot to be desired, if you have to carry alot of bits there is not really any good spot, things dont fit well (like the extra battery, it doesnt really fit in its spot, very crummy design)and things bounce around alot in there. they could do alot better
